Ook zo benieuwd waar we staat met het klimaat? Kijk dan deze TED-talk van Johan Rockström, hoogleraar en vooraanstaand klimaatwetenschapper. In 18 minuten ben je helemaal bij en hij noemt zichzelf een optimistische realist. Kijken dus!
Op 12 minuut en 10 komt hij te spreken over het resterende koolstofbudget voor de 1,5 gradengrens. Hoeveel CO2 mogen we nog uitstoten om een 50%-kans te hebben om niet over de 1,5 gradengrens heen te gaan? Dat budget is 200 Gigaton CO2. Op dit moment stoten we (alle mensen samen) 40 Gt per jaar uit. Dat betekent dat we over 5 jaar door dit budget heen zijn. Het is daarom zeer waarschijnlijk dat we ergens tussen 2030 en 2035 door de 1,5 gradengrens heen zullen breken.
Gelukkig weten we wat de oplossing is en hebben we de technologie daarvoor in huis. Alleen kunnen we niet langer stapje voor stapje lineair veranderen. Omdat we nog maar zo weinig tijd hebben moeten we exponentieel veranderen.
